Hope for crumbling Crystal Palace

Athletics Weekly - - News -

AN online petition has been set up to ask that plans for the redevelopment of the Saffron Lane Athletics Track in Leicester be reconsidered, writes

David Brown.

According to the Leicestershire & Rutland Athletics Association’s website, an email was sent out by Leicester

City Council to invite those affected by the plans to a meeting in early September, stating that “the work aims to improve the infield of the track so that we are able to maximise the use of the infield for other sports when it is not being used by athletics”.

The plans suggest that the infield could be used for American Football. In addition, the council noted that they are keen to ensure “the improvements are entirely complementary to athletics”.

However, Aneska Button, the county schools meeting organiser and track and field team manager for Leicestershire and Rutland, has concerns that the redevelopment could affect training and “deny hundreds of athletes of all ages and abilities the opportunity to participate in athletics particularly at competition level”.

She added: “My hope is the petition will not only make Leicester

City Council reconsider their current redevelopment plans for Saffron

Lane Athletics Track but will also be a catalyst for discussions with the council which include all members of the local community. This should include schools, clubs, disability groups, universities, athletics officials and England

Athletics.

“This should hopefully ensure that a plan to secure funds to update current facilities combined with a vision of how the sports centre could be run in a manner to ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations could be planned in an open and transparent manner.”
