Dam Tot Damloop, Amsterdam-Zaandam, September 23 UGANDA’S Joshua Cheptegei, the 2017 World Championships 10,000m silver medallist, marked his return from injury with a fast 10 miles win in 45:15.
The race started a a modest pace (14:23 at 5km) but Cheptegei accelerated to pass 10km in 28:15, having covered that 5km in 13:52. He maintained a sub-28 tempo through 15km in 42:13. The 10km from 5km to 15km was covered in 27:50.
Kenya’s Alfred Ngeno (45:40) and Ethiopia’s Afework Berhane (46:04) were next, with Belgium’s Bashir Abdi the top European finisher in fourth in 46:07, two places ahead of New Zealand’s Zane Robertson in 46:29.

Dewi Griffiths had his best run of an injury-ravaged year timing 47:20 in 11th place after he passed 10km just behind Hawkins in 29:03.
European 10,000m champion
Lonah Salpeter from Israel outsprinted Ethiopia’s Dibabe Kuma for the women’s title with both athletes timed at 50:45.
Apart from winning the women’s race, Salpeter, who famously sprinted a lap too early in the European 5000m, won the challenge against the men, who started six minutes four seconds behind but only made up five minutes 30 seconds.
Susan Krumins was third on home soil in 51:29 with reigning champion Mercyline Chelangat from Uganda fourth in 52:07.
Salpeter, who passed 10km in 31:43, said: “It was tough but I was determined not to lose, so I kept at it. This is my first 10 English mile race. I’m delighted with such a dramatic win.”
Home runner Krumins was very pleased with her third-place finish. “Overall, it went very well. At the 10-kilometre mark the pace was too fast and it was cold. But it’s a lovely route and being cheered on by so many people was very encouraging.”
Altogether 45,000 participated in the event.
