Lonah Salpeter from Israel outsprinted Ethiopia’s Dibabe Kuma for the women’s title with both athletes timed at 50:45.

Apart from winning the women’s race, Salpeter, who famously sprinted a lap too early in the European 5000m, won the challenge against the men, who started six minutes four seconds behind but only made up five minutes 30 seconds.

Salpeter, who passed 10km in 31:43, said: “It was tough but I was determined not to lose, so I kept at it. This is my first 10 English mile race. I’m delighted with such a dramatic win.”

Home runner Krumins was very pleased with her third-place finish. “Overall, it went very well. At the 10-kilometre mark the pace was too fast and it was cold. But it’s a lovely route and being cheered on by so many people was very encouraging.”
