PAUL FREARY AND THE AW TEAM TAKE A LOOK AT RUNNING SHOES WHICH OFFER HIGH LEVELS OF CUSHIONING
The most cushioned shoe from the brand that brought us “cloud cushioning” and this model is feature-packed and rightly so to justify its price. It is the most expensive shoe on test, so we were expecting great things from it and ultimately we were not disappointed. This is not a lightweight model probably due to the high level of cushioning on offer.
On have essentially retained their familiar Cloud cushioning/outsole system and combined it with a deeper layer of traditional foam- based cushioning. These two levels of cushioning sandwich a full-length “speedboard” – a plastic sheet that allows the Clouds and foam to work against it and absorb
impact. The cushioning does work well and with a 7mm heel drop the shoe has a unique feel and ride, best suited to totally neutral runners and perhaps even those that operate at faster paces, who run a little more on their mid/forefoot. Heavy heel strikers and those that over-pronate just a little did show signs of excessive rearfoot movement in the shoe, so it’s not for everyone (but no shoe is, so that’s not a fault of this model).
The upper takes the brand’s usual high standard to the next level, with a contoured heel lining that hugs every part of the foot, keeping it securely in place.
Any shoe that makes it to a 20th anniversary edition must be getting something right and the Nimbus is one of those shoes.
This edition promises to be the best yet, too. On first impressions the Nimbus feels a little heavy (305g) but as soon as you put it on that weight isn’t noticeable thanks to the super-plush feel around the foot. It’s like you’ve been instantly transported into a world of soft, deep pliiow, cushioned luxury.
The adaptive GEL soaks up every impact and flexes naturally with the foot, while the combination of the “SpEVA” foam and FlyteFoam offer a cushioned ride that will offer a good level of response if you pick up the pace.
Although in the neutral category of shoes, it’s very stable and supports you on the longest of runs and keeps everything under control in a fluid, smooth riding fashion.
The upper, like many of today’s shoes, uses an engineered mesh construction, and this when combined with the deep padding around the heel collar and tongue wraps the foot well and adds to the feel of luxury.
It’s a high mileage shoe that performs exceptionally well day in day out, week after week.
