KENYA’S Lawrence Cherono set a Dutch all-com­ers’ record of 2:04:06 to take a minute off of the course record.

The early pace was fast as 14 went through 10km in 29:08 and 11 passed halfway in 62:11.

Cherono proved the strong­est and blasted out a 61:55 sec­ond half.

He said: “I went all out to win and I hoped to do it in 2:04:30 so I’m thrilled I man­aged to achieve such a good time and win.”

Ethiopi­ans Mule Wasi­hun (2:04:37) and Solomon Dek­sisa (2:04:40) com­pleted the top three also in­side 2:05.

Pre-race favourite Ke­nenisa Bekele, the world record-holder on the track, dropped out near his ho­tel at 40km af­ter fall­ing off the pace at 30km.

Tad­elech Bekele of Ethiopia de­fended her ti­tle in a close women’s race with a 2:23:14 ahead of com­pa­tri­ots Shasho Insermu (2:23:28) and Azmera Ge­bru (2:23:31). Desi Jisa (2:23:39) and

Linet Ma­sai (2:23:46, de­but) were next across the line. Me­seret De­far, the multi Olympic and world track cham­pion made aa slightly low-key marathon de­but, was eighth in 2:27:25.
