Chinese cheats in half-marathon farce
WHOLESCALE cheating took place at the Shenzhen half-marathon in China last week when 258 runners were caught breaking the rules, including at least 18 wearing fake bibs.
Others took short cuts but were undone by footage from traffic cameras and local photographers.
Some of the cheating participants ran through gaps in hedges to cut as much as 2-3km off the course.
China’s Xinhua news agency described the incident as “deeply shameful” and quoted organisers as saying: “We deeply regret the violations that occurred during the event. Marathon running is not simply exercise, it is a metaphor for life – and every runner is responsible for him or herself.”
