NORTH-SOUTH DIVIDE AT NENE VALLEY

Athletics Weekly - - News -

A NUMBER of athletes at Nene Valley Harriers are unable to compete in their English area championships due to new rules linked to affiliation.

A total of 26 athletes from the club either live or were born in the North of England, but Nene Valley Harriers is affiliated to the South of England AA.

Until late last year the athletes were able to compete in the North of England championships but Northern Athletics now requires competitors to be a first-claim member of a club that is affiliated to their organisation.

To add to the confusion, Nene Valley Harriers has a base in the North (Boston) and South (Peterborough).

On the athletes’ plight, Nene Valley Harriers’ Ken Maggs says: “Their affiliation fee paid to England Athletics is funding a part of the sport in which they are unable to compete through no fault of their own.”
