A play list for twenty- bi- teen!

-

If 2018 was twenty- gay- teen, 2019 is twenty- biteen! Daya, Janelle Monae, Demi Lovato and

Brandon Urie have shunned the “straight’ and “gay” labels in the past 12 months, and if you’re looking for a mood to kick off January, check out Seattle singer Andie Case. Her new track Mysterious questions whether we should keep our emotions to ourselves or act on our feelings.

Los Angeles singer VINCINT’s having heavy feelings too. Mine is honest, real and basically relatable AF! The rising queer musician wrote this track in response to his realisation that so many people in our community are missing out on love, through a fear of rejection. Mine hits up enormous Eighties dance synths, powerful falsetto vocals and a desperation to fi nd “the one”. I’m both crying and ready to party.

After a lengthy wait, Kim Petras is set to release her debut album this year, to a chorus of “yaas” from her fans! Once famous for being one of the youngest ever people to undergo gender confi rmation surgery at 16, Kim’s now a loud, proud pop princess owning our play lists. Her Cheat Codes team up Feeling of Falling totally defi nes her star power. Kim’s slay vocals completely sear through the DJ trio’s everyman future- bass sound, creating a total bop.

If Ariana Grande fi ngering a hurricane in the God is a Woman music video wasn’t enough feminine power for your tastes, future gay icon King Princess is taking it even further! Crowned the “Lesbian Jesus” by fans at her shows ( Hayley Kiyoko may have something to say about that), King celebrates the start of 2019 with her super, sex- positive new song Pussy Is God. This defi nitely needs to be played on the radio. I can’t wait to see this girl rise.

If you’re looking for something to do amid Dry January, Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke has provided the soundtrack for new musical Leave To Remain at the Lyric Hammersmith. It tells the story of a young gay couple faced with an uncertain future when their marriage forces their two very diff erent families to come together. The soundtrack album ( out 24 January) mashes West African high life with the UK electronic scene to both uplifting and wonderfully life- aff irming eff ect.
