It’s a cliché to describe actors “as you’ve never seen them before,” but truly, you may struggle to recognise Nicole Kidman as a wrecked Los Angeles cop in this hard- bitten, niftily structured thriller. Made up like a zombie with a particularly gruelling New Year’s Day hangover, she electrifies what might otherwise be a cold- blooded procedural with layer upon layer of human damage and guilt, as her character chases a gang with whom she has a complex history. 25 January
