Actor Alan Cumming has sprinkled his stardust on this intimate East Village cabaret bar/ club to bring a friendly, community vibe to a loud, sprawling city that loves a showbiz spotlight. An absolute must for any LGBT+ visitor to the Big Apple, it’s something of a mish- mash of 1920s Berlin misadventure and New York sass for a truly mixed- up crowd of every letter under the rainbow. The venue pulls in an exquisitely bonkers blend of performers from the world of queer cabaret – such as Christeene and Velvetina – along with up- and- coming breakthrough artists. If you’re lucky, you might even spot Mr Cumming himself popping in for a rousing sing- song around the ol’ Joanna. The programme of events varies from Judy Garland- themed nights to RuPaul’s Drag Race screening events, and is packed to poppin’ during Lance Horne and Hunter Canning’s open- mic Mondays that feature everything from spokenword poetry to roof- raising show tunes.
