Bronx- born Ralph Lauren set up his fi rst menswear line, Polo, in 1968. Since then it's grown into a multi- billion- dollar brand that's much more than its iconic horse logo. Remember Ralph's

scene- stealing Friends cameo where he appeared as Rachel Green's employer? Whatever the occasion, Ralph Lauren has the solution, whether it's skiing, dressing up for an event, or dressing down. More recently, they introduced another mascot in the form of the Ralph Lauren bear, who has his own adorable part of the RL shop. The brand has countless celebrity fans — Ralph Lauren designed Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra and husband Nick Jonas’ wedding outfi ts. There's no doubt Ralph and his brand are international, but no matter how far around the

globe you go, their roots are fi rmly in NYC.

KIEHL'S

Founded as Brunswick Apothem ( which would then turn into Kiehl Pharmacy) in 1851, the grooming brand has always been en vogue. Kiehl's Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion was a favourite of pop art’s Andy Warhol and they’ve done charity collaborations with the likes of Jeff

Koons as well as Pride products, raising money for LGBT+ grassroots charities. Their apothecary- themed shops have a great atmosphere and

although there are a few dotted around the city, our favourite is the Kiehl’s on W 14th in Chelsea, because you can hop off The High Line or pop down from Soho House to stock up

on some moisturiser.

SCHOTT NYC

Brothers Irving and Jack Schott started out in 1913, making leather raincoats in a basement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan — and this is where the first- ever leather motorbike jacket, the ‘ Perfecto’, was born in 1928. The brand also designed and produced the ‘ Bomber jacket’ for the American Air Force in the Second World War. But it is the Perfecto jacket it is renowned for — Marlon Brando wore one as he sat on a motorcycle in the 1953 film, The Wild One, and James Dean was rarely seen without his. The brand continued to go from strength to strength, with icons such as Blondie and the Sex Pistols wearing their leather. They’ve remained an American classic, and celebrated their hundredth anniversary in 2013.
