Drag queen and academic Jacob Mallinson Bird ( aka Dinah Lux), 25, and best friend Hatty Carman, 29 — lead singer of queer glitter rock band ACM — have been there for each other through thick and thin, including a nasty bout of mumps…

How did you become friends?

J: We were at Cambridge University together, but just missed each other. I ended up living with Hatty in a guardianship she called Wally. It became this huge queer haven and was the most creative time of our lives.

H: We used to give ourselves terrible haircuts.

J: The place was also filled with dirt — filth and grime.

H: By the end, it was a designated biohazard.

J: I got mumps and pleurisy from living there!

H: She was lying in this tin- foiled, strobelit room with the mumps. It was probably good for all of our health that we ended up moving out. What do you love most about each other, and what are you particularly proud of the other for?

H: That she survived mumps [ laughs].

No, from afar, Jacob is this terrifyingly glamorous person, but up close so warm and generous and still the same person I met that day when his dad pulled up outside our biohazard office and said, “I’m sorry, where are you living?”

J: Hatty is the epitome of what it means to be a queer loving person in the 21st century and that rubs off on everybody. She works so hard at lifting up the people around her. Have you kissed before? H: I’m sure we’ve kissed. I mean there is an iconic photo of us, me straddling

Jacob naked as he’s doing a backflip. J: We’ve been intimate. H: We’ve also seen each other have sex a lot.

J: I woke up once and she was having sex on me, or I was having sex on her, and she said: “Fancy a threesome?” When did you realise you were “different”?

J: I did the classic dressing up when I was younger, wearing my mum’s clothes, but I came out when I was 13.

H: I was 12, doing a school play. This Sweeney Todd- style murderer, played by a girl, had to kill me. I still remember the smell of her perfume.

J: Nichest queer awakening ever!
