Keira Knightley, Matt Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode

It’s surprising that the remarkable story of Katharine Gun — the young British intelligence translator turned whistleblower on National Security Agency corruption in the run up to the Iraq War — hasn’t been filmed before now. That said, in light of current government shenanigans, Gavin Hood’s sturdy, wholly absorbing film feels well- timed. As a procedural drama, it eschews bells and whistles for solid facts, but Keira Knightley, as Gun, gives it a beating heart. 18 October
