Danish director Thomas Vinterberg deservedly won the Best International Feature Oscar for this slyly provocative black comedy that probes issues of addiction, and invites us to consider our own excesses. The brilliant Mads Mikkelsen is on form as a secondary school teacher who, feeling the drag of middle age, embarks on a social experiment of moderated binge drinking — and finds his life initially brighter, and then darker, for it.
