SMART MOVE

Rhubarb Property managing director Thomas Avery tells us about launching his Real Estate Agency and Property Management company, how COVID has affected the property market, and his advice for aspiring homeowners

-

Back in 2008, I was working for an agent as a lettings negotiator, but I felt that the company wasn’t giving me enough opportunity to show my skills. So, I took a risk and set up on my own — it was daunting, but I’m glad I did it.

The name Rhubarb Property (random, I know) came to me one day as I was driving, and I just thought, it’s a name you won’t forget easily.

Since opening the London office in 2016, it has been onwards and upwards. The thing that makes us stand out is that we match the right people with the right property; we are a one-stop property business that now also provide interior services. We know a lot of our customers, both on a personal and professional level, and can understand what people need when it comes to moving house.

Communication is key. We listen to our clients and take the stress away from what can be a testing time, and aim to provide a simple, straightforward, and transparent service that everyone is happy with.

We have a diverse client base — from doctors and overseas investors, to students and professionals — and cater to all people, wherever they come from, whoever they are, however they identify. There is no judgement or prejudice here, of any sort, we have no time for that.

COVID, of course, has had a huge impact on the property market, not just in terms of how the market is moving (it’s always been up and down), but in the way it has affected things socially.

People’s priorities have significantly shifted after having worked from home for so long: for instance, outside space is now essential for some, especially in the capital, whether it be a terrace, balcony or garden, or wanting to be closer to local parks. We have also enjoyed adapting our ways of working and now offer viewings via video and FaceTime.

I am very positive about the future, and see the market returning to a more stable position in time. Here at Rhubarb Property, we continue to evolve, reflect and recognise that change can be a good thing.

For budding homeowners looking to get their foot on the property ladder, here are my top five tips:

Make sure your finances are in order, this will give you a better idea of what you can afford.

Find a balance between what you need presently and what your long-term plan might be. Don’t put yourself under pressure — if the house of your dreams isn’t within reach right now, maybe consider other options, like buying with friends, or investing outside London. Match your current life circumstances with your home: what are your priorities?

Location, location, location. Do your homework on the area first.

Seek out a good mortgage broker and solicitor.

Above all, get in touch with me, and let’s grab a coffee. I love talking property!
