Steps back in time

- Words James Barr

Did I tell you about the time I douched on a train? It’s surprising what a gay and a sports bottle can do… In case you’re wondering, I only douche with Fiji Water. Steps’ new era makes me want to bottom (yes, for all of them). ‘Take Me for a Ride’ (!) is the gaslight bop we never knew we needed; “Don’t tell me that I’ve lost my mind and use it as an alibi” is Ivor Novello award-worthy song-writing for sure. Their latest album features 10 unheard songs including a magnificent reworking of ’80s huns Five Star’s hit, ‘The Slightest Touch’. Plus, after the success of their Melodifestivalen cover ‘Something in Your Eyes’, What The Future Holds Part 2 treats us to TWO more songs from the contest: ‘A Million Years’ and ‘Victorious’. Yas! Steps are living their scandi-pop fantasy and I’m totally here for it! Full vibes, babes. (PS, please can you save Eurovision for us? Thanks, Lisa.)

Mint Simon is one to watch. I’m still obsessed with ‘Some of Everything’ and their most recent drop ‘Pacific Coast Heartbreak’ is a gut-wrenching protest of self-love and queer expression.

It’s time for the mainstream to stop sleeping on Yungblud, too. Attitude’s pop punk obsession is back with an anthemic sound that your rock-chick nan would love (if she’d had a couple of fireballs). If you’ve ever been told you aren’t normal or that you don’t belong, ‘fleabag’ is for you. It’s for all of us.

Finally, turn up transgender artist Mila Jam. Mila’s turned the gayest song in the world even gayer. Yay. ‘It’s Raining THEM’ is a fabulous update of The Weather Girls’ classic, with the original songwriter Paul Shaffer and Spice Girl Geri Horner (who covered the song) both celebrating the change on Instagram. “Whatever your pronouns may be. Everyone is welcome.” Yes, Miss Geri! God bless Mother Nature.
