From Britney to my metal hell

- Words James Barr

Yay! FREE BRITNEY! So, what’s the plan now that she has been released from her conservatorship? Brit told a source she’s excited to make music again, but “it’s not her top priority.” I want BS to prioritise pleasure. Truly, that’s all her fans want. I can’t wait for Work Bitch (Britney’s version).

In other news, dreamy avant-garde pop-hun NEO 10Y has followed up summer’s release of sexy, cerebral single [God Is] The Camera by releasing their own fragrance, GODDEX. I ran into the singer in a sleepy west London coffee shop this month and felt a twinge of excitement as they launched themselves towards me, enveloping me in the scent. Just like their music, it’s non-binary and designed to embrace your inner God energy. Breathe it in.

Another emerging non-binary star in need of your attention is Moore Kismet. The youngest artist to play Electric Daisy Carnival, they’re a pioneering bass producer creating “beautifully controlled chaos”. Their new single, Call Of The Unicorn, is a mid-tempo power bop that screams, “I’m a badass”.

And finally, I’m starring in a new music documentary on BBC iPlayer. Sashay To Hell documents one of the most challenging weekends of my life… camping it up at a heavy metal festival. The smell. The leather. The screaming. You’d have thought I’d be all over this hellish display of masculinity, yet my prejudice towards a scene that actively celebrates its unique kind of queerness stopped me from seeing its similarity to my own. Music speaks to us in so many ways and it turns out that metal (although unbearable to my ears) is an escape and outlet for hundreds of people that feel the same as I do: othered.

Oh, before I forget, my Drag Race UK-inspired podcast, Sashay

NonGay, is also now on iPlayer!
