MERCEDES has introduced its all-new E-class Coupé prior to its official debut at the Detroit Motor Show next month. First models will arrive in dealers in April 2017.

As you’d expect, the Coupé’s design is heavily inspired by two-door versions of the smaller C-class and larger S-class. The rear end, in particular, has familiar stretched tail-lamps and the same rakish roofline, while everything from the A-pillar back is different to the E-class saloon. Naturally, pillarless doors and LED lights allround complete the upmarket appearance.

The new Coupé measures in at 123mm longer and 74mm wider than its predecessor, but 32mm taller. The wheelbase has also been stretched by 113mm, which has added an extra 74mm of rear legroom.

The interior echoes the saloon’s, with two optional high-resolution 12.3-inch monitors that create a ‘floating’ widescreen instrument and infotainment display. AMG Line models bring sportier cabin details and a revised leather-wrapped steering wheel, as well as bigger wheels and a bodykit.

In the UK, the E-class Coupé will initially be available with one diesel and two petrol engines. The sole diesel will be the E 220 d, with a familiar 191bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder. It covers 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and hits a 150mph top speed, and claims 71mpg economy and 106g/km CO2 emissions.

The entry-level petrol model is the 240bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder E 300, although a lower-powered E 200 is available in other markets. Topping the range for now is the E 400 4MATIC, powered by a 3.0-litre V6 with 328bhp and 480Nm of torque. It promises 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds, and is limited to 155mph. AMG models are expected later in the year.

All versions of the E-class Coupé feature Mercedes’ nine-speed auto box as standard. The suspension has been lowered by 15mm over the four-door, with the front and rear tracks 67mm and 68mm wider respectively to improve handling. Air Body Control air suspension is also available as an option.
