Q Must EVs obey emission-cutting speed limits?

- Tristan Shale-Hester Got any car queries? Tristan_Shale-Hester@autovia.co.uk

WHEN I was driving on the M1 through Sheffield, a 60mph speed limit was in place to reduce emissions. If I had been driving an electric car, would I still have had to obey this or could I have carried on at 70mph? Robert Sturrock, E-mail

A NATIONAL Highways is trialling reduced speed limits to cut NO2 levels on parts of the strategic road network. When these limits are in force, all cars – including EVs – must obey them. National Highways acknowledges that EVs have no tailpipe emissions, but says that it can’t safely make provisions for allowing different types of the same class of vehicle to travel at different speeds on the same road.

Q Will my insurance policy cover more once I’m 25?

I SOMETIMES drive other people’s cars using a temporary insurance app, but this can be pricey. I’m turning 25 soon and heard that I should then be able to drive any car third party. Is that true and how do I check?

HW, E-mail

A IN the past, fully comprehensive car insurance policies gave the right to drive any other car third party when the policyholder was 25 or more. This is no longer always the case, though, so check with your insurer that you’ll gain this right. You may be able to pay extra for it, or it could be cheaper to be a named driver on any car you drive – but note that it’s illegal to be a car’s main user if you are just a named driver.

Q What effect will a wrap have on warranty and insurance?

MY brother has bought a new car and wants to put a vinyl wrap on it. I told him this may affect the warranty and insurance, but he was dismissive. Am I correct and are there any other considerations to make?

Peter T, E-mail

A WARRANTIES vary over time and between car makers, so your brother needs to check the details of his policy with the dealer or manufacturer’s warranty department. You’re right that there could be implications, though, especially with regards to the paintwork and corrosion guarantee. Your brother should let his insurer know and, furthermore, he also needs to inform the DVLA of the change of colour for the car’s records.
