Q How do I care for matt paint?
I’M thinking of buying a used car with matt paint. I like the look but I’m worried about taking care of it. Am I buying in to a load of grief?
Paul Johnson
A IT shouldn’t require any more care than regular paint, but you do need to use specific products. Autoglym advises a snow foam pre-wash to avoid scratches. Then use a shampoo that doesn’t add a shine. For protection, use a spray wax that only adds a thin layer. The key with matt paint is to preserve the finish, so you should avoid polishes and abrasives.
Q Can I fix the air-con myself?
AFTER a year or so of my mother’s VW Polo being off the road, I have taken over driving it. It seems to be generally fine, but the air-con doesn’t work. Are DIY re-gas kits a good idea? Ian Cuthbert
A WE haven’t used DIY kits, but we’d get expert help because there could be leaks in the system if the air-con hasn’t been used for a long time, and part of a professional re-gas involves checking for any pressure loss. We also recommend using the air-con frequently.
Q How much for ceramic finish?
I HAVE been offered ceramic protection for my new car by the dealer and been quoted £750. This seems a lot, or is it the going rate?
Les Leonard
A IT does seem on the expensive side. If you want ceramic protection, we’d contact professional detailers in your area for quotes. Prices will depend on the product used and the amount of paint preparation required – and there may well be some needed depending on the condition of the factory finish. You may also get a choice in the type of product used.
