How can I keep my van secure?

-

1. CHOOSE A SECURE VAN When buying a van, check it has security features such as deadlocks, an alarm and even a tracking device as standard. Think about whether you need glazed rear doors, which are useful for visibility, but can be a security risk. The same goes for a sliding side door; if you can survive without it, then it gives one less potential entry point for thieves. A solid bulkhead between the cab and load area will also mean your cargo is better protected.

2. MODIFY THE VAN TO YOUR NEEDS

Consider physical security add-ons such as lockable toolboxes and cages for valuable equipment, and upgraded deadlocks or slam locks for doors.

3. INVEST IN THE LATEST SECURITY TECHNOLOGY Look at upgrading the standard-fit alarm with a more sophisticated device. The latest will be able to send you messages if your van is tampered with. Electronic GPS trackers can vastly improve the chances of recovering your vehicle if it’s stolen, too.

4. LOOK AT BASIC DEFENCES

Heavy-duty steering wheel locks (below) may seem old school, but they are effective. The same can be said for steel grilles over the rear windows, windowtinting film and even simple stickers warning that tools aren’t left in the vehicle overnight.

5. DON’T LEAVE VALUABLES INSIDE YOUR VAN

The obvious way to prevent valuables from being nicked from your vani sto not leave them there in the first place. If emptying your van every night isn’t practical, then you need to ens ure your kit is locked away properly, marked and at least out of sight. Keep a recor d of it too, in case you need to make an insurance claim.
