A LABOUR OF LOVE
Stephen Crossley owns a low-mileage Smart Roadster and a classic MG Midget. He purchased the latter after completing his A levels in late 2014.
The Midget had previously been owned by a dentist who restored some of the car’s mechanical bits back in the 1990s, although as Stephen puts it, “he wasn’t very good with the electrics”.
It’s back to points-based ignition because the magnetbased electronic system was giving Stephen problems. Like any well-prepared engineer, especially those familiar with the foibles of old English sports cars, he carries around a number of spares in the boot.
Despite it “running quite nicely at the moment”, Stephen isn’t shy of the idea of tinkering with the car. “I’d like to fit Weber kit, maybe a sportier cam and possibly an overdrive to it,” he says.
