WHEN MITSUBISHI LAUNCHED the Outlander PHEV four years ago, the car founded a class of one as a relatively affordable, ‘ultra-lowemissions’ four-wheel-drive family SUV. Oddly enough, it’s still all alone in that niche.

It has just been given more powerful electric motors, a bigger drive battery and a new 2.4-litre petrol engine, which improve outright and zero-emissions performance slightly. The real-world electric-only range stays at 25-30 miles.

New dampers and steering have made the car handle a little more precisely and ride more comfortably, but it still feels heavy and remote at times. Not that you’ll care much if it’s adding a few thousand pounds to your bank account in lower fuel bills and company car tax liability.
