AMG READIES 805BHP HYBRID
The first Mercedes-amg hybrid will enter production in 2020 as an 805bhp version of the GT 4-Door, according to Mercedesamg boss Tobias Moers. Previewed in Geneva in 2017, the hybrid drivetrain mixes a 4.0-litre V8 with an electric motor to deliver a 0-62mph time of less than 3.0sec.
Although the GT 4-Door will be AMG’S first hybrid, hybridised four-cylinder models are a longer-term possibility. Moers also sees a place for an electric AMG. He said: “If I exclude a car like that, there wouldn’t be a brand in the future. I don’t know a timeframe but we do need one in our portfolio.”
It’s not clear if a Mercedes-amg EV would be a bespoke model or an adaption of an existing Mercedes-benz model. However, Moers made clear that the stand-alone car maker AMG, based in Affalterbach, Germany, is competing with “our neighbours in Weissach” (Porsche) with all of its own models. To that end, Moers said AMG has “an appetite” for a third model range with “firm ideas” but no confirmation of what that would be.
