Price £48,495 On sale Now What’s new? Entry-level diesel motor, which makes a lot of sense in this sleek two-door

IT WAS ALREADY among the classiest of coupés, but the two-door C-class makes all the more sense with Mercedes’ entry-grade 220d diesel engine. While the car doesn’t deliver as precise or engaging a steer as a BMW 4 Series, the cabin’s superior fit and finish add to the impression that it works best as a laid-back cruiser, and that’s what the 191bhp 2.0-litre four-pot delivers.

It’s relaxed and refined, while delivering great economy for longdistance touring and the best CO2 emissions in the range, and yet still responsive enough when pushed – so long as the nine-speed automatic gearbox is left to its own devices.
