In defence of Masi

-

I’d like to respond to the letters from Scotty and David Casio (12 January).

First, Formula 1 isn’t a running race. Whether we like it or not, it has to bring out the safety car now and again. As a result, front-runners that have built up a commanding lead lose that lead. This isn’t something new.

Second, I believe race director Michael Masi was right to allow the lapped cars between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen past for safety (which he had the authority to do) and let them finish under race conditions.

Third, Mercedes-amg chose not to pit Hamilton [while Red Bull pitted Verstappen], so I believe that a lot of its anger and frustration is aimed not only at the FIA but also at itself.

Finally, Mercedes-amg dropped its appeal; if it knew that by going to court it would’ve won, why didn’t it? Andrew Young
