SALES CERTAIN, SIGHTINGS NOT

- FELIX PAGE

We hailed the original 911 Sport Classic as “the most rewarding 911 currently on sale” in 2009, finding its accurate handling and boosted performance second only to that offered by the GT division’s snarling track cars.

Whether it was worthy of a “frankly ridiculous” £140,049 then (£200,000 now) was less certain, but given that all 250 cars sold before launch and that Porsche has bumped the price up healthily for this generation, it was clearly a winning formula.

What’s less certain is just how many buyers of the new Sport Classic will get out and drive it like they stole it. If we’ve learned anything from these ultra-exclusive 911 variants (remember 2016’s 911 R?), it’s that collectors are more than happy to pay the astronomical premium and lock their hard-won sports cars away in hermetically sealed bubbles before wheeling them out a few years later at a Pebble Beach auction with delivery miles on the clock.
