The chair of In­di­anapo­lis Mo­tor Speed­way from 1988-2016, Mari Hulman Ge­orge, died last week. She was 83. The daugh­ter of

Tony Hulman Jr, who saved IMS in 1945, she formed a suc­cess­ful Champ Car team and mar­ried one of its driv­ers, Elmer Ge­orge. Their son Tony Ge­orge founded the Indy Rac­ing League, which grew into the cur­rent Indycar Series. A noted phi­lan­thropist, Hulman Ge­orge over­saw an era that brought F1, NASCAR and Mo­togp to the Speed­way.
