Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin steers his

Alfa Romeo 8C to vic­tory in the 1931 Le Mans 24 Hours. The win­ning car, shared with Lord Howe, com­pleted 183 laps of the 10.153-mile cir­cuit, rack­ing up a to­tal of 1857.999 miles at an av­er­age speed of 77.417mph. Just six run­ners were clas­si­fied as fin­ish­ing the race. Among the ac­co­lades for the vic­to­ri­ous Bri­tish driver duo was a tele­gram from Ital­ian prime min­is­ter Ben­ito Mus­solini con­grat­u­lat­ing them on a ‘win for Italy’…
