Mugello on F1 calendar for inaugural Tuscan GP

- LUKE SMITH

Formula 1 has confirmed that it will make its first visit to Italian track Mugello in September as part of an expansion of the 2020 season calendar to 10 races.

F1 had been rumoured for some time to be weighing up a maiden grand prix at the Tuscan circuit, with talks taking place as part of the push to find more grand prix venues in Europe.

Official confirmation arrived last week that Mugello will host the Tuscan Grand Prix on 13 September. It will form a third triple-header of the revised 2020 season, following races at Spa and Monza as the ninth round.

Mugello had already cancelled its Motogp round, but there was regular contact between series promoter Dorna and F1 over plans for a grand prix at the track.

The announcement means Ferrari will celebrate its 1000th grand prix at Mugello, as well as enjoying title sponsorship for the event at the circuit it owns.

The Russian Grand Prix is also confirmed for 27 September, with more races set to be added in the coming months. Promoters in Sochi have resumed ticket sales for the race, but F1 is expected to allow a limited number of fans to return to the grandstands starting from one of the Italian rounds.
