Famous Trivellato name returns in sportscar arena

- GARY WATKINS

The Italian Trivellato Racing squad that helped Riccardo Patrese, Elio de Angelis and Gerhard Berger on the road to Formula 1 is to make a comeback in the GT arena after nearly 30 years away.

Trivellato, a leading Mercedes dealership in Italy, has linked up with sportscar specialist Villorba Corse to run the German manufacturer’s GT3 and GT4 machinery under the banner of the team that scored a hat-trick of Italian Formula 3 titles in 1976-78 with Patrese (above), de Angelis and Siegfried Stohr. The team, run in its heyday by brothers Pino and Francesco

Trivellato, also raced in the European Formula 2 Championship with Patrese,

Stohr and bike legend Giacomo Agostini.

The new organisation plans a handful of outings with its Mercedes-amg GT4S in this year’s Italian GT Championship as a lead-in to full campaigns in 2021 in both GT3 and GT4. It is likely to make an assault on the GT World Challenge Europe, in which Villorba was pro-am teams’ champion in what was then the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2014, and the GT4 European Series.

Villorba Corse boss Raimondo Amadio, whose team raced at the Le Mans 24 Hours in LMP2 in 2017-19, said: “Trivellato is an icon in Italian motorsport. When I got the call from the Trivellato family asking if I was interested in doing something together, it was a real honour. It makes sense because Trivellato runs an AMG Performance Center and we became a Mercedes customer team last year.”

Trivellato CEO Luca Trivellato, son of Francesco, explained that he envisages a long-term with relationship with

Villorba Corse as his family looks to rekindle its racing heritage.

Trivellato Racing’s last major season of racing was in 1989 when Luca Badoer drove for the team in Italian F3. It subsequently closed its doors in the early 1990s.
