Pereira takes it to the grass to secure glory over Guven

RED BULL RING (AUT) 12 JULY

ROUND 2/8

Spec machinery and a lack of DRS in the Porsche Supercup have resulted in two processional races kicking off the 2020 season. Add in that both events have been at the Red Bull Ring, which doesn’t readily offer overtaking opportunities, and the spectacle has been diminished.

For drivers, if they can avoid losing out through Turn 4 then they’re odds on to maintain position for the rest of the lap. Polesitter Ayhancan Guven took that to the extreme in his battle with Dylan Pereira.

Guven edged third-starting Pereira further and further to the inside of the circuit as they approached the apex in his bid to hold first place and secure a second series win. Guven kept on closing the gap, and left it to Pereira to keep his foot flat and brave it with two wheels on the grass.

His commitment paid off and as the track folded through the long right-hander, it put Pereira on the superior inside line to take position. With a clear track, the Lechner Racing driver was able to bolt to a 3.75-second victory.

Guven settled for second, aided by third-place Larry ten Voorde reining in his wide lines and keeping off the kerbs so as not to incur a five-second penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits.
