F3 Cup suffers small grid but more are set to join
The F3 Cup featured a small grid of just eight cars as its season began at Snetterton last weekend, but organisers believe entry numbers should return to double figures later this year.
The series struggled to attract entries in 2019, averaging 10 cars, but prior to the COVID-19 outbreak a larger entry was on the cards for this season.
Numbers were reduced as reigning double champion Cian Carey decided not to defend his title and the University of Wolverhampton Racing Team elected not to attend because of concerns around social-distancing measures. Due to the size of the team, which runs Shane Kelly in the championship, it was decided that they were unable to adhere to the new guidance.
Motorsport Vision Racing competitions manager Joe East said: “I think it’s difficult for a lot of business owners. To then go out racing when employees are furloughed or are having to make redundancies, I think that has affected the grid a little bit this weekend as we’ve got a lot of business owners.
“I think next time out at Donington, which is in September, the grid will be stronger again with at least another two if not more.”
