Polesitter Emerson Fittipaldi (Mclarenford M23) and Niki Lauda (Ferrari 312B3) lead the field away at the start of the 1974 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park.
Lauda outdragged Fittipaldi off the line, taking control of the race and setting fastest lap. Then on lap 67 of 80 he encountered the immediate aftermath of John Watson’s spectacular and ultimately successful bid to bring his Brabhamford BT44 to a controlled stop after a front-suspension failure. Lauda slipped off the road on the debris and into the barrier, leaving Fittipaldi to claim the win.
