Cracking the code of how to win
When you’ve cracked it, you’ve cracked it. After last weekend, Lewis Hamilton is the new Formula 1 wins record holder, Scott Dixon is a six-time Indycar champion and four-time British Touring Car title winner Colin Turkington is back atop the 2020 points race.
Each of those drivers has established a special relationship with their team over a long period of time, and are still reaping the rewards. All three could break the championship title records in their respective disciplines soon.
Hamilton’s motivation to dig deep and overturn the advantage Valtteri Bottas appeared to have over him during F1’s first grand prix at the Algarve Circuit is remarkable given how successful he has already been – reminiscent of Michael Schumacher. As Alex Kalinauckas shows in our report on page 18, the Portuguese track provided some unusual challenges, and Hamilton rose to the occasion once again.
Dixon did his points damage early on in the Indycar season, but the Chip Ganassi Racing star had to withstand a charge from Penske’s Josef Newgarden to seal the crown at the St Petersburg finale (p40).
Turkington’s grip on the BTCC is far less certain, but the WSR BMW driver’s ability to come through the rough and tumble at Snetterton was so good it seemed to irritate his rivals (p34).
Nick Tandy completed a different kind of achievement at Spa (p44). Always one for the big occasion, Tandy now has outright wins in the 24-hour classics at Le Mans, Spa and the Nurburgring, not to mention class successes at Daytona and Sebring. All with Porsche. Cracked it.
