Ash Sutton
“It’s special because it was a tough season” Paul Monaghan
“We picked up points in nearly every single round, it was an incredible season for us” Ash Sutton
Twice Ash Sutton had won the British Touring Car Championship prior to 2021, and twice he had been foiled in the voting for the Autosport National Driver of the Year Award.
Back in 2017, it was unfortunate coincidence that his maiden BTCC crown happened at the same time as Lando Norris captured the public imagination by winning the Formula 3 European Championship title. In 2020, as Sutton claimed his second tin-top honour, UK motorsport enthusiasts went crazy about Harry King’s exploits in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
This time there was no denying him, and Sutton topped the vote against BTCC pal and rival Josh Cook, newly crowned three-time Carrera Cup GB champion Dan Cammish and British GT king Dennis Lind. He received the beautiful glass Paul Warwick Memorial Trophy from Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to be standing in front of all these people and their own achievements to pick up this award,” said Sutton.
