“Thank you to everyone who voted, it was a great season” Oscar Piastri

He already had some illustrious antecedents as a one-time winner of the Autosport Rookie of the Year Award. Now Oscar Piastri belongs to an even more exclusive club of two-time victors alongside Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

In 2020, Piastri headed the voting for his exploits in securing the FIA Formula 3 crown at the first attempt. In 2021, the Australian was even more emphatic in claiming FIA Formula 2 honours at the first attempt. This fired the public into action to select him once again as the winner of the Rookie award (presented by Johnny Herbert), ahead of Indycar convert Romain Grosjean, F1 new boy Mick Schumacher and European Le Mans Series sensation Yifei Ye.

“It’s looking like a different year for me this year,” said Piastri, who will take on Alpine F1 reserve driver duties after the door was shut on a race seat.

“Obviously I’m on the sidelines, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity [in 2023] and I’ll be pushing hard.”

If he does get that F1 race seat, what price Piastri becoming our first three-time Rookie award winner?
