Williamson to make British GT debut
Former Mclaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Lewis Williamson will make his British GT Championship debut this year alongside James Cottingham as 2 Seas Motorsport enters the series full-time.
Williamson, the 2010 Award winner, raced with 2 Seas in the Gulf 12 Hours last year aboard a Mclaren 720S GT3. The 32-year-old Scot will now race with the Anglo-bahraini squad in a Mercedes-amg GT3, the same model with which he won the 2018 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup Pro-am title.
“For me it’s a great opportunity with the way everything has gone over the last two years [with COVID-19],” said Williamson. “To be racing in the UK is great and I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be back in the Mercedes this year.
“The team themselves, when they commit to things they know it’s possible to get the wins. You have to be aiming for the highest level and, if that comes in the form of wins, the championship will come as well. A lot of people think it [British GT] is easy, but it’s one of the most competitive series on an Am level and a Pro level.
It’s going to be tough.”
The 2 Seas team has competed in British GT over the past two seasons, but only raced part-time in 2021, when it took a victory at Silverstone with Hunter Abbott and Martin Kodric.
Renowned historic racing ace Cottingham returns to British GT, in which he contested the opening two rounds last season in a RAM Racing Mercedes. “It’s an exciting new challenge as an entirely new discipline,” he said. “I’m looking forward to racing with Lewis to keep the momentum up, pushing for race wins and the championship.”
