Hedley aiming for title after joining Elite for GB3 season

- STEFAN MACKLEY

James Hedley will compete in the GB3 Championship this season with Elite Motorsport, completing the squad’s three-driver line-up.

The 18-year-old took the 2019 Ginetta Junior title with the team, before moving into British Formula 4. He spent two years in that series, achieving four wins and fifth in the standings during each season.

Hedley raced in the final 2021 GB3 round at Donington Park with Elite, taking a best result of 10th, and now returns for a full campaign. “It’s going to be tough and competitive, but I see no reason why we can’t be fighting for the championship,” he said.

A new Tatuus car, which will produce more power and downforce than its predecessor, will be introduced into GB3 this season, but supply delays have meant teams running more than one driver have had to share the seat time in the new model.

“The testing has been going really well but we’ve been limited because of the car situation,” said Hedley. “It’s a lot quicker [than the previous car]. The aero it has makes a big difference. It’s quicker in the straight, but the g-force around the corner, that’s where you notice the difference.”

Hedley will partner Tom Lebbon and John Bennett at Elite, taking the number of drivers for GB3 to 19, with the first race taking place at Oulton Park on 16-18 April.
