South African F1600 series begins

- MARCUS PYE

British expat Ian Schofield and single-seater veteran Rick Morris headed the concurrent Formula Ford 1600 races as South Africa’s F1600 Championship began last weekend with a double-header at the Killarney circuit.

Brothers Gerard and Antwan Geldenhuys claimed a maiden 1-2 finish for their Abacus Divisions Mygale team on Saturday, heading a record 15-strong field.

Split by newcomer Josh Le Roux in qualifying, Gerard and Antwan capitalised when leaders Le Roux and Jarrod Waberski tangled. Le Roux recovered and finished fifth, behind Nicholas van Weely

(in the sole Van Diemen) and rookie Jason Coetzee.

Le Roux won Sunday’s sequel, heading the Geldenhuys duo until Gerard had an excursion under pressure from Waberski. Rookie

Troy Dolinschek put car weight issues behind him to grab third behind Antwan. Ewan Holzhausen and Gerard Geldenhuys completed the top five.

Three points separate Antwan, Gerard and Le Roux at the top of the table heading to the second round (of seven) at Zwartkops next month.
