Mawson takes Oz GP support

- ANDREW VAN LEEUWEN

Joey Mawson took control of the Australian Drivers’ Championship with a dominant display at Albert Park.

The weekend got off to a nervy start for Mawson, who sprinted from the rest of the field in the early stages of the nine-lap opener, only to have a front-wing element break midway through the race. That meant he faced enormous pressure from second-placed Aaron Cameron in the closing laps, but ex-german Formula 4 champion and European Formula 3 racer Mawson defended hard as he held on for a narrow win.

A 75% reversal of the grid put Mawson outside the top 10 for Saturday evening’s second race, and any chance of real progress was hampered by a first-lap crash between James Davison and Zane Goddard that prompted a safety car. The lengthy clean-up and fading light meant the race was called while still under caution after five laps.

Still Mawson had enough points to start Sunday’s feature race from pole, where he put in a controlled performance to comfortably beat Nathan Herne and Tim Macrow.

He now leads the Gold Star by 27 points over Macrow, while Cooper Webster and James Golding have slipped to 50 and 51 points behind respectively.
