Schnitzer BMW name returns

-

The famed Schnitzer name and former racer Kris Nissen will return to the

DTM package in harness this season.

Bavarian Stefen Trautwein and his son Yannik have acquired the machinery, spare parts, archive and naming rights of talismanic long-time BMW factory team Schnitzer Motorsport, which closed its doors in 2020 not long after the passing of long-time boss Charly Lamm. Under the name Schnitzer Classic, the team will run a Super Touring BMW 320i E36 in DTM Classic as well as a Class 1 M3 E30 for Nissen, whose car is a replica of the test machine he drove in the winter of 1990-91.

“There is hardly any other name so closely connected with the golden days of DTM than Schnitzer,” said Trautwein Sr. “Therefore, running the historic race cars in DTM Classic is the logical step.” Nissen added: “We had very nice conversations, the chemistry was right, everything was perfect.”

The series kicks off with next week’s DTM Lausitzring support round.
