First Pickups champion Simpson returns to the series at Pembrey

- PETER SCHERER

The inaugural Pickup Truck Racing champion Jeff Simpson returned to the formula for the first time in 23 years when he raced at Pembrey last weekend.

The championship is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and Simpson claimed the title in that first season.

After a previous lay-off, he returned to competition to become the 2012 Silhouette champion, which he almost repeated the following year, but crashed at the final round and had not raced since.

“The truck was just sat in the garage after my son Matt [former British Touring Car driver, who was a race winner in Pickups last year] raced it, so I decided to bring it out,” he explained.

Simpson finished all three races at Pembrey, taking a brace of 14th-place finishes before improving to 12th in the finale.
