JAGUAR RACING
Jaguar’s 2021-22 season didn’t really kick off until Rome, where Mitch Evans dominated both races in the Eternal City to move himself into championship contention in one fell swoop. The team hadn’t wanted for speed, but execution had been Jaguar’s main bugbear until the first European round of the season.
Evans has been a perennial factor in the title fight throughout the Gen2 era, and has been just slightly shy of taking the spoils. He will hope his back-to-back Rome success and second place in Monaco can provide a springboard for a more concerted title challenge.
The New Zealander heads into Berlin as the form driver, having scored 71 of his 72 points this season in the past three races, including a runner-up spot in Monaco despite early energy management concerns.
Sam Bird is one of Formula E’s stalwarts, and has the unenviable record of holding the most race wins without a title to his name. The Brit started well with fourth in Diriyah, before going two races without points. He returned to the scoreboard with fifth in Rome, a weekend in which he largely played tailgunner to Evans, before a crash with Nick Cassidy in race two. Bird then endured a difficult weekend in Monaco – he qualified well down the order before retiring from the race with a broken trackrod. It’s a difficult start to overcome, but Bird isn’t a driver to shy away from a challenge.
