MSP hosts a Macmillan coffee morning to support the charity

-

MSP Sharon Dowey has been doing her bit to support Macmillan’s coffee morning by hosting a drop-in.

Ms Dowey played host to an event on September 30, which is an annual date for those across the country to host a coffee morning, raise funds for the charity, and share stories of loved ones.

The coffee morning raised a vital £286.90, which will go towards research.

Macmillan Cancer Support was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan whose father passed from cancer.

Over the years Macmillan has continued to adapt the support by providing emotional, practical, physical, and financial support.

One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives and Macmillan nurses are there to help them from the moment they are diagnosed.

Macmillan hosts a number of fundraising events across the UK each year, raising millions of pounds throughout the decades.

“The work of Macmillan and their nurses is crucial in supporting those living with and affected by cancer,” said Ms Dowey. “Cancer can affect anyone, impacting every part of their life.

“It will be reassuring for those diagnosed with cancer to know that Macmillan is there to support them and their loved ones through difficult times when it’s needed most.

“Around 97 per cent of Macmillan’s work comes from vital donations and I am delighted to have played a part in Macmillan’s fight to beat cancer.

“Together we raised a total of £286.90.”

Kate Seymour, Macmillan Cancer Support said: “Last year, people hosted coffee mornings across Scotland and raised over £710,000 which was amazing.

“It helped us to provide much needed support, including Macmillan Grants to over 4,000 people in Scotland.”
