MSP calls for more to be done to eradicate poverty
A SOUTH Scotland Ayr MSP has called for more to be done to eradicate poverty in Scotland.
Marking Challenge Poverty Week 2022, Carol Mochan MSP highlighted recent statistics that show one in four children in Scotland live in poverty.
There are also one in five working age adults living in poverty in Scotland
The Labour MSP said: “It is absolutely shocking that in 2022 so many children and working adults are still living in poverty including in towns and communities across the South Scotland region.
“The reality is we have a Tory Government at Westminster that is too focused on helping the rich, and an SNP Government at Holyrood focused on dividing communities on constitutional matters.
“The real division across the UK today is that as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
“It is incumbent on representatives of all parties to join workers in their fight for better pay and conditions, and to give their support to campaigns such as that for universal free school meals so that we can take steps towards alleviating some of the pressure on working families.
“I will continue to use my time in parliament to stand up for working people and to call on the Scottish government to use their powers to improve the lives of the Scottish population.”
All three Ayrshire councils have been involved in the fight against poverty, including support for foodbanks, more free school meals being made available for schoolkids and also establishing breakfast clubs for children.
Community hubs across Ayrshire have also been playing a major role .
