Ayrshire WoSFL - a little bit of everything

-

AYRSHIRE saw a little bit of everything this weekend, as numerous competitions took place right across the county.

There was the small matter of the senior Scottish Cup for Auchinleck, Cumnock and Kilwinning Rangers, with varying success across the board.

It was disappointment for Cumnock Juniors who played live on BBC Scotland on Friday night versus Dumbarton.

A Ryan Carnwath goal got the East Ayrshire side level after they fell behind in the first half, but two goals in the last 15 minutes handed the League Two side a 3-1 win.

It was the same scoreline for Kilwinning Rangers, who also fell at the hands of a League Two side, with Forfar running out 3-1 winners.

A Thomas Collins goal on 89 minutes made it 2-1 and gave the home side hope, but it wasn’t to be as Forfar made sure of the result in added time.

Auchinleck, however, got their name in the hat for the next round. They came from 1-0 down to level the match against Bo’ness United before going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

This wasn’t the only cup taking place though, with several West of Scotland Football League Cup preliminary round ties also being played.

Ardeer Thistle came crashing out at home to Largs Thistle, as two second half goals gave the away side a 2-0 victory.

In what can only be considered the game of the round, Irvine Victoria scored six but it wasn’t enough as Thorn Athletic claimed a remarkable 7-6 victory.

And Craigmark Burntonians also progressed to the next round after they defeated Royal Albert 5-2.

The last remaining second round tie in the Scottish Junior Cup saw Troon progress to round three, and an away tie against Blantyre Vics this Saturday, after a 4-0 win at home to Fraserburgh United.

Back to league action, and only one Premier League game took place in Ayrshire. In an East versus North battle, Irvine Meadow defeated Glenafton Athletic 2-0 thanks to goals from Connor Boyd and Neil Slooves.

In Division One and Kilbirnie moved back to the top, albeit with two more games than their nearest rival, thanks to a 2-1 win over Blantyre.

In Division Two, Muirkirk picked up three much needed points with a 3-1 win at home to Yoker Athletic, while in Division Three, Saltcoats won for the first time this season, beating Lugar Boswell Thistle 2-0.

Dalry Thistle were also winners, battling to a 1-0 victory away to Carluke, but Kello Rovers’ title hopes were dented after they lost 2-1 away to Finnart.

Taking over at the top of the table are Ardrossan Winton Rovers, who defeated second placed Larkhall Thistle 3-2 away from home: the North Ayrshire side are now a point clear in first place, but have played one game more than their rivals

And Girvan fell to defeat, as Newmains United won 4-2 at Hamilton Park.
