South Ayrshire’s politicians react to Sunak’s appointment as PM
AYR’S politicians have responded to the appointment of Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister.
Mr Sunak was appointed the country’s new leader after the failed leadership of Liz Truss.
Prime Minister Sunak is the first British Asian head of the United Kingdom, and the youngest PM in 200 years.
Some of Ayr’s politicians commented on the move on the day he was appointed.
Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown said: “Although Rishi Sunak and I hold opposing political views, I do congratulate him on his success and for becoming the first British Asian to hold the office of Prime Minister.
“It is imperative that he immediately begins work on addressing the cost of living and energy crisis which has been created by his party.
“Any talk of more austerity must be quelled.
“The Scottish Government has an undeniable mandate to deliver a second referendum on independence.
“The Prime Minister should work collaboratively with us to deliver on this and not deny the people of Scotland a say over our future.”
South Scotland Labour MSP Colin Smyth said: “Changing their leader again won’t change the fact this is an incompetent Tory government which has inflicted economic chaos and it is ordinary families who paying the price with rising mortgages and planned cuts on our public services.
“Rishi Sunak was the chancellor who ushered in the cost of living crisis and the biggest drop in household income on record and has no mandate from the people to be Prime Minister.”
Mr Smyth added: “That shouldn’t be a decision for the handful of Tory MPs who gave us Liz Truss just a few weeks ago, but a matter for the people.
“It’s time we had a general election so the public can have their say on this immoral Tory government
‘It is imperative he immediately begins work on addressing the cost of living crisis’
and the chance to vote for the change we so desperately need”.
But Conservative South of Scotland MSP Sharon Dowey posted to social media: “Congratulations to the new PM and leader of the Conservatives.”
She continued: “Now is the time for the party to come together and get back to delivering for the United Kingdom.”
