Young Ayr musicians get the chance to work with Benedetti Foundation

-

AYR’S young musicians had the session of a lifetime recently as prominent musical educators visited Ayr.

Founded by famous Ayrshire violinist Nicola Benedetti to help nurture young musical talent, The Benedetti Foundation visited Ayrshire recently to work with young string players from local secondary schools.

80 musicians attended the foundation’s ‘String Residency’ session, and Ayr Town Hall echoed to the sound of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.

The young musicians worked on two pieces of music, the 1st movement of St Paul’s Suite Holst and the 2nd movement of Capriol Suite Warlock as well as exploring free improvisation with Foundation Ambassador Simone Seales.

There was also a sharing session for parents and families at the end of the day.

A number of primary class workshops took place in Troon Primary, Glenburn Primary, St Ninians Primary and Ayr Grammar, earlier in the week with 600 children. The sessions, led by Lucy Drever and Calum Huggan, were a chance for pupils to explore rhythm and improvisation in a fun and engaging way.

All the sessions were planned in partnership with South Ayrshire Music Service along with music services from East and North Ayrshire. There was also support from Creative Scotland.

One pupil commented: “The String Residency was a great day. I really enjoyed working with other pupils from across the whole of Ayrshire and learnt a lot.”

Another said: “I loved the Benedetti Foundation visit to my primary school it was great fun. I hope they come back again.”

Laura Gardiner, Foundation Director, said: “It is so wonderful see that music is thriving in Ayrshire and a real pleasure to bring these three exceptional music services together to collaborate with such passion and commitment.

“As someone who grew up in the area, it was a joy to return and see such focus and hard work from the young people. We are really proud of what they achieved together.”

Councillor Stephen Ferry, education portfolio holder at South Ayrshire Council, said: “This was a great experience for the pupils and the instructors were very impressed.

“Nicola Benedetti is such an inspiration, and the pupils were thrilled to find out she used to play her music in Ayr Town Hall as well!

“I would like to thank the organisers and the foundation for their expert tuition, and well done to the young musicians they should be very proud.”
