Planning for Prestwick’s future

- Stuart Wilson

A planning summit on the future of Prestwick has called for more “culture and heritage” to balance the town’s thriving nightlife.

Residents who took part in a council and governmentfunded charette have had their say on how the town should progress. And they have put “health and social care” among the priorities for Ayrshire’s most up and coming town.

Julie Twaddell, who helped co- ordinate the project, said: “The level of feedback received over the last few months has been hugely encouraging.

“The clear message coming through is that Prestwick cares.

“A number of workshops were held to identify key issues for the future and we’ve identified some important aspirations going forward.”

Among the projects set for development is a sensory garden at the Biggart Hospital as part of Prestwick becoming a “Dementia Friendly” town.

Other areas of focus include the conservation of St Nicholas Old Kirkyard and a clean- up of the town’s beach. Julie added: “It’s about getting the balance right and we heard from lots of schoolkids and a wide cross- section of society.

“Having culture and heritage as a more visible part of the town is clearly something that people want and hopefully this can help achieve that.”

An independent report on the charette will be published in the coming weeks.
