Turnberry diners can savour a taste of the past

- Stuart Wilson

Donald Trump is to unveil his Turnberry makeover next week – with a taste of Italy.

The billionaire is flying in a host of top Tuscan chefs to front a new- look eaterie at his £ 200million resort.

It comes as the finishing touches are put on the lavish revamp ahead of Turnberry’s re- opening on June 1.

Il Tramonto at 1906 will be the flagship dining experience on offer for guests at the five star attraction.

It marks a return to an Italian flavour for the resort, which once played host to the famous Stagioni restaurant.

General manager Ralph Porciani said: “Our decision to go back to having an Italian restaurant was nothing to do with my Tuscan roots as a Porciani.

“It was based on a previous experience here at Turnberry.

“Many of our Ayrshire regulars will remember the incomparable menu we launched in 2007 at the Spa complex as Stagioni.

“Within weeks of opening it was drawing guests not only from our own restaurants but from further afield.”

Recruitment of chefs has taken place from as far afield as Vietnam.

Salvatore DeVivo, from Naples, will lead the kitchen team after being brought in from Hanoi, where he opened and operated the region’s “most acclaimed Italian restaurant”.

Vegetables will be sourced locally from Dowhill Farm.

The hotel officially re- opens its doors next Wednesday with a grand re- opening ceremony scheduled for later in the month.
